In 2020–21, £11 billion was spent on children’s services. Of this, £5.7 billion, or almost half, was spent on children in care. Almost two thirds (£3.7 billion) of spend on children in care went on residential and fostering care. Of the £1.8 billion spent on all foster care, £0.9 billion was in the private sector. Of the £1.8 billion spent on all residential children’s care, £1.3 billion was in the private sector.
