Xiang Yu Was Unbeatable—Until His Supply Lines Began to Collapse | Silk and Steel

Xiang Yu seemed unstoppable. But could one strategic strike on his food supplies change the course of an entire civil war?

In this episode of Silk and Steel, Carl Zha and his co-host continue to explore the dramatic Chu–Han Contention, the struggle that followed the collapse of the Qin Dynasty and ultimately determined who would rule a united China.

Xiang Yu has dominated the battlefield. He has repeatedly defeated Liu Bang’s forces, but victory in battle does not guarantee victory in war. As Liu Bang rebuilds his forces, his allies begin to attack Chu’s supply lines. They destroy grain stores and capture strategically important cities.

Then comes a daring opportunity: the seizure of Ao Granary, a former Qin imperial grain store that could deprive Xiang Yu’s armies of a vital food supply.

With Xiang Yu distracted by the attacks of Peng Yue, Liu Bang must decide whether to risk a major offensive before his formidable rival returns.

But the struggle is about more than armies and provisions. Liu Bang’s relationship with his brilliant general Han Xin is increasingly strained. Han Xin pursues a larger strategic plan to outflank Xiang Yu, while Liu Bang repeatedly worries about his general’s growing military power—and sometimes takes command of Han Xin’s troops away from him.

That growing mistrust will have tragic consequences for the adviser Li Yiji.
