Simon Roche, of South African exit-strategy group Die Suidlanders, argues that apartheid was not purely an Afrikaner creation but grew out of British colonial segregation policies.
He adds that the system was unsustainable, yet believes current socio-economic conditions in South Africa are actually worse than under apartheid.
He also points to ongoing foreign interest in the country's natural resources, to suggest South Africa remains a strategically valuable pawn on the global stage.
