Germany has joined Ireland and Greece in declaring that private citizens’ savings will be protected by the state. In doing so, they seem to have dealt a massive blow to the very foundations of the Tower of Babel that is the Maastricht Treaty. At the very least, they have exposed European monetary union for the joke that it is.

Angela Merkel announced the guarantees after an emergency meeting of the Bundesbank and the financial regulator, called because Hypo Real Estate, Germany’s second largest commercial property lender, is in trouble after a €35bn rescue plan collapsed.
The problem for the European elites is that they must have been drunk when they architected Maastricht.
Until 1999, member states’ central banks were their “lenders of last resort.” However, with the introduction of the euro, and with the exception of the UK, currency sovereignty was transferred to the European Central Bank, and so while national central banks are still generally responsible for providing extraordinary liquidity, they have no role in the creation of currency.
Apparently, the architects of the euro believed this apparent paradox could simply be ignored.
It gets worse.
Article 104 of the Maastricht Treaty states that “(o)verdraft facilities or any other type of credit facility with the ECB or with the central banks of the Member States (hereinafter referred to as ‘national central banks’) in favour of Community institutions or bodies, central governments, regional, local or other public authorities, other bodies governed by public law, or public undertakings of Member States shall be prohibited, as shall the purchase directly from them by the ECB or national central banks of debt instruments.”
So this is effectively saying that the ECB and national central banks are prohibited from lending to central government, among others. Where, I wonder, are Ireland, Greece and Germany getting the money to finance these guarantees? It would be nonsense for them to borrow it from private banks. They’re all bankrupt, after all.
Ah, but hold on … what’s this?
Article 103(2) states, “Where a Member State is in difficulties or is seriously threatened with severe difficulties caused by exceptional occurrences beyond its control, the Council may, acting unanimously on a proposal from the Commission, grant, under certain conditions, Community financial assistance to the Member State concerned. Where the severe difficulties are caused by natural disasters, the Council shall act by qualified majority. The President of the Council shall inform the European Parliament of the decision taken.”
Which means that in exceptional circumstances, central governments can apply for a waiver of the rules surrounding funding via the ECB or central banks. So, apply to the EC, act as a unified Europe, then anything is possible. Except none of the three nations to guarantee bank deposits so far has made any such application. By acting unilaterally, they have effectively decided that Maastricht isn’t worth the paper its written on. In fact, they have admitted that the only mechanism for dealing with the current financial crisis is via the sovereign nation state.
Can the EU survive under these circumstances?

Germany and France who, after all, are the architects and engine of the EU, only use EU Directives and Regulations etc., when it suits them. This present financial crisis calls for leadership so, out comes Angela Merkel to “save her country”.

There seems to be some serious backpedalling going on. The UK in particular is panicking in case Germany legislates on this guarantee. Merkel is under pressure to say that the guarantee is a “political” one, just like the UKs.
The UK is panicking that as a result of this, money will flow out of UK banks into German banks – which is exactly the kind of scenario Article 104 was supposed to prevent.
British banks can’t afford for that to happen.
Lets see how this plays out … but that tower is looking mighty wobbly.
The issue here is public credit, which is illegal under Maastricht.
We are witnessing the collapse of EMU and an opening for a return to a public credit model of national economic financing.

Let us hope that the answer to your question is that EU in current form cannot survive this. An opportunity is emerging to form a de-gaullian EU, which means an organization without membership of UK, improved by bringing Russia in. Certainly, this would be in the best interest of the German economy and continental states around it. It would also bring hope for American people that they would no longer have to support their exorbitantly expensive and ludicrous empire.

The current EU is in no way Soviet style anything. The Soviets had a planned economy and at no time did they attain the degree of regulation as in current EU. De-gaullian EU simply means no UK (as a Trojan horse of US) influence on Europe. EU is in any way a 19th century idea: a simple tax union, with an Ottoman style overblown legal regulations, except that they fail to provide protection. Without Anglo-American banking fraudsters and with the energy giant Russia the EU (meaning Eurasian Union) would be a clear engine of progress for their peoples.

Why would what you linked look to me or anyone as “de-Gaul” EU? The post you linked is irrelevant to the discussion here. (London would never be part of “de-Gaul” EU anyway.) I did not suggest a “de-Gaul’ EU exists. In fact, I suggested that a return to his original idea of setting up EU in such a way that UK is explicitly dis-included (UK not part of EU), if enhanced by inviting Russia in, would benefit the continental European states more than staying in the current EU (where UK is a member). My point is based on an assessment of the economic interests of most European states. Those states would do well to invite UK out of EU and let UK go alone or unify with the US whatever it likes, but as long as UK (the Trojan horse of the US) is part of EU things will not end up well for most states. This point has nothing to do with the issue of whether the current EU (that includes UK) is a totalitarian or dictatorial construct. I recently saw a Philip Glass opera called “Satyagraha” which was about the life of Ghandi, and how his peaceful, non-violent movement changed history for India, and how these ideas spread and fed into the US Civil Rights movement via Martin Luther King. But fundamentally, the message is simply that of our saviour who taught us to love our enemies, and our neighbours as ourselves, for we are our brothers’ keeper.
It is from this tradition that we should take our lessons. The oligarchy is always looking for ways to provoke, divide and enrage us to hatred, and we must resist that and stick to doing what is right, whatever they throw at us.

May I be so bold as to make comment here.
The elite created much of the division long ago, the greatest of which was the reformation. This has split Christianity. Many people I have met on my journey thus far, people who are good people, are so divided based on thier own understanding of the scripture.
The truth as I see it shows without room for doubt, shows conclusivley that the gap between those who live by the message of Christianity and those leading the said organisations, is as great as that between good and evil. The fact most people live the message means every so often when war is required based on the said leaders whim, then all those loving people are no good to the leaders and so the very same leaders create mistrust and hatred, thus changing the whole basis of the society ideal, usurping that which was good and balanced.
This being the case I feel we all have to look hard at what we believe, and how we understand our own role in this drama, and how by default we give our energy to that which is destroying.
I am reminded of the old proverb and warning:
‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge’.
Just looking back through history proves rather well who the people being destroyed are…It is the good and decent people who always and are presently being slaughtered. Christianity is being divided yet still, so I would conclude Christians are a part of these people who lack all there is to be known, and thus the very means by which as an organisation they seem powerless.

What was handed down to us—say until some time in the 1950s, was good and precious, and we retained a reasonable sense of time honoured British values.
We were in those days, in general at least, a nation of white Anglo Saxons extraction Brits, and we had just about finished up as one of the last great rulers of the world.
Even today our traditions are well respected upon many a far off shore, some say even more so than here upon ours.
We gave the world our Magna Carta and Common Law which the great democracies grasped with both hands.

The EU will engulf us.
Our police are gearing up for mass riots, and by gearing up I mean arming and training ready for combat with the people of this nation.
The police and military are being put through a process of brainwashing in order to see the situation of Us and Them.
This is much like the NAZI policies of dehumanising the JEWS at the death camps. A dehumanised Jews was then as easy to slaughter as a dog or goat.
Right throughout Britain the population is in the vice like grip of Common Purpose, which has been specifically designed to make mindless slugs out of you all. We have so much open oppression now in the UK that the old democratic purists would turn in their graves, as would all those magnificent military personal who gave their lives to defend what our adversaries could never destroy—now those things in Westminster are happy to give it all away.

If that is our fate then we must face it as human beings, and as Christians, without fear.
This life is but a short episode in a great play, in this case a tragedy of unbelievable epic proportions that only Shakespeare could fully grasp.
But, I do not believe that it will be our fate. People are beginning to wake up and come out of their dream state in increasing numbers, as the shocks hit them one after another.

We do not need our children to rot inside their homes playing with toys they don’t need. Let them walk and be happy, healthy and free. No need to use gasoline to go everywhere. We don’t need to be told by deceptive media that we should worship morons on television and that we need materialistic objects. We don’t need to waste our lives putting ourselves in debt in paying for a house that’s too big. Two or three toilets in one house and including two or three bathrooms, three tv’s, four cars to a family and sometimes more. How many clothes do you have in your wardrobe that you don’t wear? You really want to live and behave like Paris or the Whores in the City?
It’s all an illusion. No one needs all this excess crap. We can easily live well on a lot less of the things we spend our life and money on. This will eventually lead to the destruction of Capitalism and it’s disease on society.

On a lighter note about three years ago I went through my shamefully over stuffed, over large wardrobe and took away three small vans loads of clothes to a local hospice. I felt good over helping out the poor and I realised, without realising what I was in danger of becoming.
Since that time I have evaluated my life and my priorities, let my hair grow, and live in jeans, truthfully living down the fact that I was in danger of living up to Radix Omnia Malorum et Avaricia, while so many were freezing and starving!

London Banks Are Falling Down, Falling Down, Falling Down…
Increase DecreaseOctober 7, 2008 (LPAC)–Three of Great Britain’s largest banks–the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Lloyds–reportedly held late night meetings on Monday night with Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, to cobble together a giant government bail-out package to prevent the banks from going under. Although Darling would not confirm the meeting, saying coyly “It would be irresponsible to speculate on the specifics of future responses”–the only known case where Darling has opposed speculation–the discussions reportedly did occur, and they centered on a $79 billion government bailout.
Part of the problem is that country’s top six banks have $95 billion in paper coming due by March 2009, which is three times as much as the same period last year, and of course nobody is lending to anybody these days. Of this amount, $28 billion is owed by Barclays, and another $20 billion is owed by RBS, which is the Queen’s own piggy bank.
The markets were not comforted, however, by the assurances delivered by Barclays CEO John Varley, who said today: “We have our feet on the ground.” The banker gave no further indication, however, about the location of his head.

How to solve the worlds financial problem.
1 Nobody pay any more money to banks for their mortgages – these to be excused.
2. Ditto all credit cards, personal and business loans and overdrafts – all excused.
3. Nobody to pay another penny in tax to governments – let them go bankrupt… taking gold plated politician’s pension with them… down the drain
4. With all the remaining money that people have from their now overly generous wages… everybody make an appropriate contribution to their fire department, police (provided they do the job they are supposed to) the local hospital, etc. and save some money for a pension.
5. If you feel the urge NOT to pay traffic wardens and elf and safety busy bodies… thats’s fine.
6. If you want to give your hard earned money to the unemployed so that they can hang around the pubs playing pool – feel free.
7.Give a bit to genuine charities so that they can help the genuinely disadvantaged… they are much better equipped to know who these are.
8. Plant some veges in your garden and buy a couple of chickens and trade your eggs and carrots with the guy down the road who has started his own brewery.
9. Never pay VAT on anything ever again.
10. This plan isn’t perfect and needs refining, but its a darn sight better than the one we have already.
11. When the revolution begins… support it, we need all the help we can get.

7. Response – The two foundations of the system must be destroyed. 1. Big Government and (2) the manipulation of money control. Reduce the size of government and return the money to a standard that cannot be manipulated. The dismantlement of big government is the first action to be taken, the return of schools to local control, police to be removed from central government. Denounce revenue sharing as a transparent device leading to control over local government, and promote local representatives who will reduce the size of local government. Theses local representatives must be independent of established politics.
